Whither the iPod Classic?

I bought myself an iPod Classic 160GB last week - for just 160 British Pounds at Heathrow Airport.

My first iPod was one of the original white (2G?) in 2003, and I've had Nanos and Touches since then. With the Classic, this is the first iPod I have owned where I can carry ALL my music with me. Now that is something special. I actually see it's non-Wifi / non-App / Music-focus as an ADVANTAGE. With my iTouch, I found myself surfing the web or on apps rather than just relaxing and listening to tunes.

I had heard the speculation that it may be discontinued in September, and that pushed me to buy one now.

(If the new iTouch comes out next month, I might buy one of them too, but for Apps, not music)

Dan Frommer wonders whether Apple is set to eliminate the hard-drive based iPod Classic next week. I wouldn’t be shocked if they did, but I bet they won’t. The iPod Classic is like the Mac Pro — not something that sells in huge numbers compared to Apple’s mass market products, but it fills a lucrative and important niche. Some people really do want 160 GB of music in their pocket.
